Downturn has an upside - New Mexico scraps the death penalty

It always amused me how American Conservatives were so eager to protect life when it came to dictating to women whether they should have the right to chose if they want to have an abortion, while at the same time were eager to strap someone to an electric chair or fill them with poisonous injections if they committed serious crimes.

Well it seems that the lack of money has forced some to reconsider the merits of the punnishment.

While they will claim that it was for moral reasons, the reality is that it is costing individual states millions to have someone on death row.

Add to the cost of the initial trial, the cost of a sentencing trial, and years upon years of appeals running in to millions paid by the taxpayer.

Today, the state of New Mexico decided to scrap the death penalty. And it looks like that a number of other states are giving scrapping it some thought.
